Canoeing & Kayaking

Get ready for up close views of magnificent limestone cliffs and bluffs, an abudance and variety of wildlife and peaceful surroundings (no motorized or mechanized vehicles are allowed in the wilderness area).
Recently my husband and I took a short, one hour kayak trip from the Hwy 14 Bridge to Buffalo Point. During that time we spotted a gutsy blue heron 15 feet away that kept a watchful eye on us, several timid turtles sunning themselves and a hungry beaver chowing down on some local vegetation. And that was only an hour on the river!

With more than 50 species of fish in the river, the Buffalo boasts a healthy population of game fish.
Historic Homesteads
Explore the abandoned ghost town of Rush and don't forget your camera! Rush was founded as a zinc and silver mining community during the 1880s. It became famous in 1883 when the largest single piece of Zinc ore ever extracted was placed on display in Chicago (at the World's Fair) which remains on display today. The boom period for Rush ended with the end of World War I. Rush is unusual because it is maintained by the National Park Service.
